#AccióJove: A film festival created by young people

Fes! #AccióJove is a community cultural management training programme aimed at secondary school students in Barcelona. Since 2017, it has developed processes of awareness, knowledge, and observation of reality that promote critical consciousness about the causes of inequalities and conflicts in the world through the screening and analysis of short documentaries and the collaborative production of the Fes! Film Festival – Cinema and Human Rights.

The project consists of the conception, programming, planning, and production of a human rights film festival organized collaboratively, in which students identify other young people from their environment as the target audience. The programme is developed within the school curriculum as a practical learning proposal in which students create an awareness-raising service that aims to enable other young people to enjoy diverse cinematic expressions that help them understand the causes of injustices in the world and inspire them to lead initiatives for improving living conditions, human dignity, and global justice.

“The screening and analysis of documentary short films promotes awareness about the causes that generate inequalities and conflicts in the world.”

The working methodology allows students to acquire basic knowledge and skills through the design and implementation of a social awareness project that connects local action with its global dimension. The events are implemented in local cultural centres with the objective of achieving broad community impact. The proposal aims to stimulate youth social activism in Barcelona in defence of human rights and the common good, providing tools for debate and reflection that contribute to changing attitudes and practices, making possible a critical, responsible, and socially engaged youth committed to social transformation.

When we talk about awareness-raising, we refer to a process that enables people to become conscious of the deep interdependencies that connect local issues with the global environment. Addressing aspects such as solidarity, peace, sustainable human development, and the analysis of inequalities can only be done by taking into account the cause-and-effect relationships between different territories.
