“I sing to women so that we can stop enduring what we were taught to endure.” With this premise, Karina Ortiz —a Mexican singer-songwriter and cultural producer based in Barcelona— develops projects that integrate Mexican and Latin popular music —ranchera, bolero, cumbia— with stage creation and cultural production from the migrant experience. She reclaims the Latin songbook from a gender perspective: for decades, men composed the narrative of love that women sang. Her original work now writes our own, draws on her own migrant experience, makes visible the violence that we have learned to normalize, accompanies grief, and weaves community with Latinos in the process of integrating into Europe. She does not speak for them: she sings with them. Traditional and original music as a political territory and a space of care.
A musical project that reinterprets Mexican and Latin American folk traditions from a migrant and gender perspective, using music as a space for memory, care and community.
